三、牺牲爱情是孤独的自由

如果说财富和荣誉等外在力量对1900的冲击力不大的话,那么,无论谁都回避不了对爱情的`渴望。为心爱的姑娘下船,这是他唯一一次付诸于行动的事件。

此时,与爵士乐鼻祖杰里的斗琴已经让1900名声大振,各路唱片制造商纷纷前来淘金,打算借此大发横财。就在1900灌录唱片时,一位清纯的少女无意间进入了他的视野,舷窗外少女天使般的面容在蓝天碧海的映照下显得格外纯洁动人,1900透过狭窄的窗户凝望着少女天使般的面庞,目不转睛,他已经完全被少女打动了,手指弹出的曲调情不自禁也变得轻柔舒缓,无限恫怅又无限向往。从女孩儿在窗前的出现到暂离,又到出现在另一个窗外,1900从惊喜、热切到失落、沉郁,从落寞、期待又到欢欣,一颗跌宕的心透过美妙的音乐被记录在模板上,这张世上仅有一份的唱片,镌刻了他当时的灵感迸发,记录了他仅有的瞬间。1900只愿将惟一一张唱片送给自己心爱的女孩儿,发自内心的无意识的爱促使他下决心上岸,去寻找爱情。

我们不难看出,1900对女孩儿的爱情是单纯美好的,它绝不是一种永无止尽的贪婪的占有欲,然而爱情一旦付诸于行动,它就会成为催使欲望诞生的“本源”。我们可以设想,一旦1900真的上了岸,纯洁爱情伴随的或许就只剩下繁琐的生活和永远无法满足的物质追求,而这种生活终会将他生存的原动力消磨殆尽。于是,当1900站在的舷梯正中央时,面对陆地,面对陌生的城市,他犹豫了,站在舷梯上,他什么也看不见,有的只是无数条街道、无数的选择和没有尽头的世界。如果为了爱情,要放弃自己生存的基础和真正想要的生活的话,他宁愿不爱。1900向往爱情,但他更热爱音乐,更渴望对本我的坚守。正所谓,“生命诚可贵,爱情价更高,若为自由故,两者皆可抛。”

用1900自己的话说:“在那望不到尽头的城市中,让我如何选择,如何去选择一条街道、一栋房子、一个女人、一片属于自己的风景、一种属于自己的活法……”这正是影片中1 900拒绝踏上陆地寻求爱情的缘由,如果他自己的精神主体性遭到喧嚣世界的无情摧残时,毅然选择扞卫精神的自由,这种选择无疑是孤独的,但也正是这种孤独成就了1900精神的高贵。

四、选择之自由

作为一个被遗弃的孤儿,或许1900能获得一种自由的天性,但是对于他究竟会拥有怎样的人生,归根到底还是由于选择的自由。

其实《海上钢琴师》整部电影讲述的就是一个关于选择的故事,1900一辈子不离开弗吉尼亚号是一种选择,而麦克斯离开弗吉尼亚号到陆地是一种选择,杰里的唯我独尊是一种选择,老人决定到美洲新大陆开始新的生活是一种选择,1900随船而终也是一种选择。不同的选择注定了不同的人生。

然而,在这些选择中,唯有1900的选择才称得上自由的选择。康德认为:人生是由痛苦的经线和纬线编织成的地毯,只有不死的精神与绝对的自由意志才是值得人们追求的至善的人生境界。麦克斯的选择是为了能用音乐在别人身上找到自我实现的价值,杰里的选择是为了维护其爵士乐鼻祖的地位,老人的选择是为了让家人过上新的富足的生活。正所谓“有求皆苦,无欲则刚”。

前面的几个人物皆有所求,因而,他们总会被一种无形的东西束缚着,然而1900早已在年复一年中习惯了在局促狭窄的蒸汽船舱内享受心灵的自足与平静,习惯了于周而复始的诗意旅程中体味精神的稳适与自由。就像莎士比亚说的:“即使将我置身核桃壳中,我也拥有一个世界。”1900即是在核桃壳般的船体空间内为己开辟了一道宁静、自由的心灵港湾,固守着理想中的精神世界。他几乎不受任何外界欲求的影响,追求至善境界的音乐精灵,放弃看似繁花似锦的陆地,而选择终生与弗吉尼亚号相伴,在船上的日子,它又选择了钢琴,选择了音乐,选择他所“看得见”的幸福,直到生命的最后一刻,他又选择了与惨败破旧的弗吉尼亚号同归于尽。

1900说:“在那望不到尽头的城市中,让我如何选择,如何去选择一条街道、一栋房子、一个女人、一片属于自己的风景、一种属于自己的活法……。陆地对我来说像是一艘过大的船、一个太漂亮的女人、一次过长的旅行、一首我无法演奏的音乐……”总体而言,陆地对于1900来说有太多的不确定性,他无从选择、无从判断,更谈不上驾驭和利用陆地上的客观规律实现自由:

而陆地上的金钱、地位、名誉等更是文明对人的束缚,人沉沦其中,只会沦为被控制的客体,根本没有选择可言:但是大海、维吉尼亚号和钢琴对1900来讲是确定的,是他所熟知和能掌控的,他不用在过多的选择和判断中丧失主体性,而是通过对确定性的熟知和控制实现了自由。

结语

如果从深层次讨论1900的自由的话,我们可以从西方存在主义哲学中找到源头。存在主义又称生存主义,它是当代西方哲学主要流派之一。存在主义以人为中心、尊重人的个性和自由,认为人是在无意义的宇宙中生活,人的存在本身也没有意义,但人可以在存在的基础上自我造就,活得精彩。

1900虽然一生漂泊在海上,但是他却早已看尽了陆上人世间的繁华与落寞,辉煌与凄凉。固守在自己精神理想国的1900,不仅在音乐上造诣斐然,而且还可以轻易地洞察出入生百态、世俗名利、人情冷暖。

但是,1900自由的人生无非又是悲剧的。显然,他对于人生的这种精神追求与人的社会性存在方式是相悖的。人首先作为自然存在,需要受到自然条件的种种限制;其次作为社会存在,又要受到社会关系的种种制约。来自自然(生与死)、社会(命与时)、自我(情与欲)的种种束缚决定了人类不可能在现实世界中享有精神自由这样一种绝对的、彻底的自由,人类需要在精神自由与社会制约间寻求一种平衡。

虽然1900超越了对自身局限的领悟,可是能够洞察一切的他如果在陆地或者社会上还是不能掌控自己的命运,把握自己的未来。他只可能在那个他自己认为是有限的世界中过着有限的生活,这是违背人的社会属性的,因而1900最终也只有在有限的生活中一步步走向穷途末路。

在存在主义者看来,人生活在一个与自己对立的、失望的世界之中,人在世界上的地位是不确定的。绝对自由的人也是烦恼和无所依靠的孤独者。人虽然有选择的自由,但他面对的未来的生活却是混沌而没有目标的。他只是盲目地走向未来,他只知道人生的真实的终结就是死亡。

当然,这种悲剧的结局因为不符合影片自由的主题而被导演掩饰掉了。在影片的结尾,导演处理1900的死时采用了浪漫唯美的手法,以至于我们感到的不是令人绝望生命的终结,而是生命的另一种回归,回归自由的海洋。

Undoubtedly, he is a genius; he chose his own imaginary world to live in than the world of humans. “I would rather give up my life than to live in a never-ending world. I gave up on the journey to land, not because I see, but because I could not observe……” At least, he chose his own way of the world. Beautiful and free was the music he played from over the 88 keys of the piano. It was music that filled his pure and simple life. Aren’t we, living in a different world from 1900, a world filled with pressure and pain, living for somebody else? There are some things that we have ample power to reach but did not treasure their value. Therefore we have missed a lot of the beauty life offers.
